The verdict

Verifier checks wiring, qualifier checks speed, certifier proves the category for warranties.

Verifier: is it wired right?Wiremap, length, toning and coax. MicroScanner2 $643–$813.
Qualifier: will it run 1G/10G?Speed qualification plus PoE and switch diagnostics. LinkIQ kit $2,947–$3,889.
Certifier: is it Cat 6A?Required for manufacturer warranties. DSX2-5000 from $13,443 new, used DSX-5000 from $3,000.

The details

Short answer: a verifier checks continuity and wiremap (is it wired right?). A qualifier checks whether a link can carry a given Ethernet speed (will it run 1G or 10G?). A certifier measures the link against TIA/ISO category standards (is it Cat 6A?) and produces the report manufacturers require for a cabling warranty. Prices step up with each tier: about $640–$815 for a verifier, $2,950–$7,750 for a qualifier, $13,400+ new for a certifier.

Which do you need? If the customer or the cabling manufacturer's warranty asks for certification reports, only a certifier will do. A qualifier can't replace it. For moves/adds/changes and troubleshooting, a qualifier or verifier is usually enough. More: LinkIQ vs DSX, LinkIQ vs MicroScanner2 and best cable certifier.

FAQ

What is the difference between a cable certifier and a cable tester?
A basic cable tester or verifier checks wiremap and continuity. A certifier measures the link against TIA/ISO category limits (such as Cat 6A) and produces the reports cabling manufacturers require for warranties.
Is the Fluke LinkIQ a certifier?
No. The LinkIQ is a qualifier: it shows whether a link supports speeds up to 10GBASE-T, but it does not certify to a category standard.
How much does each type of cable tester cost?
In our data, the MicroScanner2 verifier was $643.32 to $813.04, the LinkIQ qualifier kit $2,946.95 to $3,889.27, and a new DSX2-5000 certifier $13,442.94 to $14,651.87.
